Top 10 Coin World's 2025 Most Influential People in Numismatics

Lee Minshull’s introduction to numismatics began at an early age, when a teenage fascination with silver coins led to a lifetime career.

Lee Minshull, Founder, Minshull Trading

Growing up in Michigan, Minshull discovered that bags of silver coins could be acquired at face value and resold for a profit, blending his passion for coins with an emerging business sense.

By age 14, in the early 1970s, he had already established a small mail-order coin business. This early entrepreneurial spirit set the stage for a remarkable career in numismatics.

In 1977, Minshull’s promise was recognized nationally when he received the American Numismatic Association’s Young Numismatist of the Year Award.

A year later, he accepted a scholarship to attend the ANA Summer Seminar, where he proposed and earned the organization’s first internship, working as a teaching assistant in a counterfeit detection course.

His professional trajectory took a significant step forward when he joined Steve Ivy Rare Coins in Texas (now part of Heritage Auctions) in 1978.

Starting as a cataloger and consignment coordinator, Minshull quickly rose to manage the company’s wholesale division.

After more than a decade in Texas, the lure of California led him west, where he briefly worked for another firm before founding Lee Minshull Rare Coins in 1992.

The company, now known as Minshull Trading, has grown into a nationally recognized powerhouse, maintaining a massive inventory spanning from the latest Mint releases to ancient coins valued in the millions.

Minshull attributes much of his company’s success to its commitment to diversity and innovation.

“My team and I pride ourselves on the diverse range of coins we deal in, from the most recent Mint releases all the way back to the earliest coins minted,” he explained.

His personal favorite category remains the Roman 12 Caesars coinage.

“When a client gets to hold an Augustus aurei, minted not long before the birth of Jesus, I can tell that their joy is almost unmatched in the world of collectibles.”

His firm maintains between $2 million and $3 million in world and ancient coin inventory, highlighting Minshull’s passion for connecting collectors with the tangible history that ancient coins represent.

Always at the forefront of innovation, Minshull played a pivotal role in the 2023 launch of VaultBox, a modern coin marketing concept inspired by trading card pack purchases.

Using the new NGCX 10-point grading scale, VaultBox offered sealed boxes of random coins ranging from common American Eagles to rare pieces like the 2020-W American Eagle V75 WWII Privy-mark gold $50 coin.

“We want to reach out to people who have never collected coins before — people who have collected baseball cards and comic books,” Minshull said.

VaultBox represents a bold step toward making coin collecting accessible and exciting to a new generation.

In addition to his entrepreneurial ventures, Minshull has made significant contributions to numismatic literature.

He has been a contributor to A Guide Book of United States Coins (the Red Book) for over 30 years and has offered advisory input to more than a dozen major numismatic publications.

His expertise has been widely recognized: in 2014, he was named the ANA’s Harry J. Forman Dealer of the Year.

Beyond coins, Minshull serves on the board of directors for Valaurum, a company that produces gold-backed currency products like the Utah and Nevada Goldbacks.

His role in strategic marketing and investment underscores his continued influence in the broader precious metals and collectibles markets.

Today, Lee Minshull’s passion for coins remains undiminished.

Whether selling rare Roman aurei, pioneering new marketing platforms, or helping collectors build exceptional portfolios, Minshull continues to blend historical appreciation with cutting-edge innovation.

His impact on the numismatic world — from young enthusiast to respected industry leader — remains a testament to a lifetime of dedication and vision.
