Market Analysis: With Star or No Star on Grant commemoratives

With Star and No Star variants exist of both the 1922 Grant Memorial silver half dollar and gold dollar commemoratives. This MS-67 With Star half dollar realized $17,400, while an MS-67 No Star gold dollar with a green CAC sticker sold for $6,300.

Leading the commemorative half dollars in Heritage’s July 15 sale of the Auriah Rayne Collection was a 1922 Grant Memorial, With Star half dollar graded MS-67 by NGC that sold for $17,400.

The star appears on the first 4,256 coins minted of the issue and the sunken star was removed from the die for the remaining 67,405 coins. As the “Red Book” notes, “The star has no particular significance.”

Laura Gardin Fraser designed the half dollar and the accompanying gold dollar, which also features the With Star and No Star variants, each with a mintage of 5,016 pieces.

The Auriah Rayne Collection’s 1922 Grant Memorial, No Star gold dollar graded MS-67 by Professional Coin Grading Service carried a green Certified Acceptance Corp. sticker indicating quality within the grade and Heritage called it, “lustrous with rich honey-gold coloration.” It realized $6,300.
