Market Analysis: Major error on Type I 1917-S quarter
- Published: Oct 28, 2024, 5 PM
Any major error on a Standing Liberty quarter dollar is a delicacy. On August 17, Stack’s Bowers Galleries presented a 1917-S Standing Liberty, Type I, Bare Breast quarter dollar struck 15% off-center that sold for a reasonable $7,200.
It was graded Uncirculated Details, Gouged by Professional Coin Grading Service, with the unusual modifier recognizing some heavy marks in the left reverse field. The cataloger wrote, “The error is unmistakable as there are crescents of virgin planchet along the upper right obverse and lower right reverse borders,” while calling the obverse Gem quality and noting both sides are highly lustrous. “The entire package is lightly and attractively toned in iridescent pinkish-silver,” and it is a rare example of a significant error on the Type I issues of 1916 to 1917.
