Scrapbook kept by engraver James Smillie sells for $30,550 in Heritage Sept. 3 auction

The James Smillie Scrapbook of Examples of His Work sold for $30,550 Sept. 3 at the Heritage Currency Signature auction in Long Beach, Calif.

Smillie, a noted engraver and fine artist, tells “the history of his engraving life in his own words in this 2-inch think book which contains examples of his work beginning in 1819,” according to the auction catalog. The book includes approximately 200 examples of items he worked on including die proofs, along with “explanations for the significance of many of the items are included in Smillie’s own hand,” according to the catalog description.
