Stack’s Bowers plans special sale of McCartney coins

Stack’s Bowers Galleries will once again partner with The Royal Mint of the United Kingdom for an auction of exciting British numismatic pieces.
A special auction will be conducted on March 19 highlighting a bespoke set of Presentation Edition gold and silver coins honoring Paul McCartney, acclaimed icon of music and pop culture.
Struck in 5-kilogram formats, these pieces deliver a visual appeal matched only by their rarity. Just one gold and only four silver pieces are available for collectors, presented exclusively through this sale.
McCartney is a British musician, singer, songwriter, and composer who first rose to international prominence as a member of The Beatles, one of the most influential and successful bands in music history.
Acclaimed for his melodic bass playing, versatile vocal range, and prolific songwriting, McCartney’s influence spans generations.
In honor of his indelible impact on society, the Royal Mint worked directly with McCartney’s production company, MPL Communications, and with the singer himself to develop a truly exceptional coin release in 2024. Handcrafted under the guidance of Royal Mint CEO Anne Jessopp and the King’s Assay Master Daniel Thomas, these are considered some of the rarest and most inspiring pieces to emerge from the Royal Mint in the modern era.
When asked how it felt to be commemorated on such a coin, McCartney responded, “This feels like a huge honour. It’s not anything I would have ever expected to happen when I was a kid.”
The 5-kilogram gold piece is the largest Proof gold coin produced as part of the Royal Mint’s Music Legends series. It took over 250 hours to make, including three days of polishing. Hand-signed by McCartney during his 2024 Got Back tour in Paris, France.
The winning bidder will receive a short congratulatory video from McCartney.
Only four of the silver 5-kilogram pieces exist for collectors in Presentation format (a fifth example was gifted to McCartney). Like the gold counterpart, these silver coins are the largest Proof silver coins in the Music Legends series and reflect the first time Paul has been honored on a British coin.
Rebecca Morgan, Director of Commemorative Coin at the Royal Mint, said, “This is an exciting opportunity for collectors and fans of Paul McCartney to own a unique item celebrating one of the most influential music artists and songwriters of all time.
“Each coin available at auction is a testament to the exceptional skills of our craftspeople at The Royal Mint. Taking hundreds of hours to produce, the masterworks crafted from gold and silver feature highlights from Paul’s career and his journey to becoming one of Britain’s most successful artists in history.
Each of the Presentation coins is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity signed by McCartney.
Additionally, McCartney and the Royal Mint donate a percentage of the revenue from this auction to charity, allowing buyers to acquire a historic keepsake while also contributing to a good cause.
This joint effort between Stack’s Bowers Galleries and the Royal Mint comes on the heels of several similar partnerships between the two organizations in recent years, including a sale of special Royal Succession coins that realized $5.1 million in August 2023 and an auction of First Strike coinage that realized $1.8 million in October 2024.
Brian Kendrella, president of Stack’s Bowers Galleries stated, “It’s an incredible honor to be working with Paul McCartney, MPL Communications and The Royal Mint in bringing such rare and iconic works to public auction. Paul McCartney’s timeless music and multigenerational appeal continue to inspire and unite fans across the world, making this a memorable event that all can enjoy.”
