Respected collections a feature of Sedwick auction

Gold cobs from the McGregor Collection provide collectors an opportunity to own treasured coins from the 1715 Fleet.

Sedwick & Associates will conduct Auction 38 featuring Treasure, World, U.S. and World coins and paper money from their new offices in Maitland, Florida. The sale opens with two days Nov. 12-13 from the Florida location with the final day (Nov. 14) open to online bidding.

The first day will feature two sessions, starting with gold cobs and shipwreck coins and concluding with a session on silver cobs. Three sessions are scheduled for day two, starting with over 500 lots of world coins. This will be followed by a smaller session highlight6ing medals, U.S. coins and world paper money. The last session of the day will see the selling of ancient coins, coin jewelry and artifacts. Saturday’s Express sale will offer nearly 400 lots to close out the auction.

The sale offers a number of quality collections. They include the Sedwick-Downing Collection of Mexican Charles-Joanna Coinage, the Almenara Collection of Peruvian Republic gold coins, the Darby Collection of Guatemalan cobs, the Val y Mexia Collection of Chilean Bust 4 reales and the Ugaz Collection of Lima cob 2 reales.

High interest will be seen with the sale of the McGregor Collection of gold cobs from the 1715 Fleet. Highlights include a 1714 J “quasi-Royal” gold cob 8 escudos from Mexico City. This rare coin, graded Mint State 61 by Numismatic Guaranty Co., offers perfect detail of the shield and cross and a bold full date. Another eye-catching offering is the only example of a 1714 J gold cob 8 escudos struck with Royal dies found in the NGC census. It is graded Mint State 63. Both coins have the 1715 Fleet designation on the encapsulation labels.
