Nomos’ 471-lot public auction May 31 in Zürich, Switzerland, of ancient, Greek, Roman and Byzantine coins brought total hammer results of 2,232,825 Swiss francs ($2,825,841 in U.S. dollars).

That total does not include the 22.5% buyer’s fee or any other relevant fees.

Topping the lots was a gold aureus of Romano-Gallic Emperor Postumus, A.D. 260 to 269 that remains virtually as struck and brought a hammer price of 150,000 Swiss francs ($189,924 U.S.).

The aureus’s obverse depicts a laureate, draped and cuirassed bust of Postumus facing right. The reverse depicts MINER FAVTR (meaning Minerva Fautrix, the Helper) advancing to left, holding a palm branch in the right hand and spear and shield in the left.

Among other highlights in the sale are:

• A circa 525 to 480 B.C. silver stater from the Thraco-Macedonian Region, Berge (previously identified as either Lete or Siris). On the obverse, a nude ithyphallic satyr stands facing right, with his right hand grasping the right arm of a nymph fleeing away from him to the right; around them are three pellets. On the reverse is an incuse square with uneven surfaces. In Extremely Fine (according to the auction house), the coin sold for 75,000 Swiss francs ($94,962 U.S.). • A circa 500 to 450 B.C. electrum stater of Mysia, Kyzikos. The obverse depicts a winged ithyphallic mythological creature with a man’s body, a short animal tail, a horse’s mane, a tall griffin’s ear, and the head of a lion-boar, in a running or kneeling posture to facing left, its head to its right, holding a tunny by the tail with his right hand, and resting his left at his waist. The reverse carries a quadripartite incuse square. In Extremely Fine (according to the auction house), the coin sold for 75,000 Swiss francs ($94,962 U.S.). • A gold aureus of the Triumvirs, with Marcus Antonius and Marcus Antonius Antyllus, minted in 34 B.C. by the mint moving with Marcus Antonius. Obverse inscriptions read ANTON·AVG·IMP·III·COS·DES·III·III·V·R·P·C with the head of Marcus Antonius to the right. On the reverse, inscriptions read M·ANTONIVS[·M·F·F], with the had of Marcus Antonius Antyllus to right. • A gold aureus of the Triumvirs with Mark Antony and Octavian, in 39 B.C. from the mint moving with Octavian in Central or Southern Italy. On the obverse is CAESAR IMP and the head of Octavian to the right, lightly bearded. On the reverse is ANTONIVS IMP and the head of Marcus Antonius to right. • A gold aureus of A.D. 117 to 138 has on the obverse HADRIANVS - AVGVSTVS P P with the bare-headed and draped bust of Hadrian to right, seen from behind. On the reverse is COS III P•P, with Hadrian, in military dress his cloak flying out behind him, riding a horse rearing to the right, holding a couched spear with his right hand. Struck in high relief and graded by the auction house as good Extremely Fine, the coin sold for  32,000 Swiss francs ($40,521 U.S.) and more information is at www.nomosag.com/nomos-38/450.

• A gold aureus of Nero A.D. 54 to 68 with the obverse reading NERO CAESAR AVG IMP and depicting the bare head of Nero to the right. The reverse has PONTIF • MAX • TR • P • VII • COS IIII • P • P • around an oak-wreath enclosing EX S C. With a splendid youthful portrait of the emperor of fine style and graded by Nomos as Extremely Fine, the coin sold for 26,000 Swiss francs ($32,924 U.S.).
