Market Analysis: U.S. Assay Office 400+ ounce gold ingot

Visually the most impressive lot in a recent Stack's Bowers sale had to be a large-sized 1935 U.S. Assay Office at New York gold ingot containing 400.875608 troy ounces of .9969 fine gold.

The cataloger observed that the piece was “cast in a neat rectangular shape, [with] the typical casting imperfection on the bottom much shallower and less prominent than one might expect, especially for such a large-size ingot.”

It is countermarked by Mocatta & Goldsmid Ltd., London, with the cataloger suggesting, “this ingot probably entered the London market immediately before, during or shortly after World War II — an era when large international bullion transfers of this type would have been more common than they became in later decades.”

It sold for $1,020,000, just a bit under its bullion value at the time of sale.
