Market Analysis: Super toning on 1929 quarter

Vividly toned, this 1929 Standing Liberty quarter dollar graded MS-67+ Full Head with a green CAC sticker brought $72,000, improving on the $66,000 it realized at the Pogue VII auction in March 2020.

The most visually exciting Standing Liberty quarter in the Patton collection sold  by Heritage had to be a wildly toned 1929 example graded by Professional Coin Grading Service as Mint State 67+ Full Head with a green Certified Acceptance Corp. sticker, recognizing quality within the grade, that sold for $72,000.

It is one of three like-graded at PCGS, and Heritage noted “glistening, frosty mint luster illuminates slivery-green, sun-gold, crimson, violet, and light russet hues across each side.”

The price bested the $66,000 it realized at Stack’s Bowers Galleries’ Part VII offering of the D. Brent Pogue collection in March 2020, where it soared past its presale estimate of $18,000 to $22,000. That cataloger wrote, “This is a fully frosty, sharply struck, exceptionally attractive Superb Gem that would do equally well in a high grade type or date set, or a specialized collection of rainbow toned silver.” For reference, Heritage sold a less colorful, comparably graded example for $38,400 at its 2021 August ANA auctions.
