Market Analysis: Scarce gold medals near melt

Two likely rare gold medals sold for near their melt prices. A 1976 George Washington American Revolution Bicentennial Medal brought $1,560 and a 1976 American-Israeli Numismatic Association American Bicentennial medal sold for $2,400.

Collectors looking for scarce gold medals can often find them near melt value, as seen in two offerings from the Sydney F. Martin Collection Part VI presented by Stack’s Bowers Aug. 19 and 20.

Bringing $1,560 was a Professional Coin Grading Service Mint State 65 1976 George Washington American Revolution Bicentennial Medal. The 75% gold medal issued by the Washington State American Revolution Bicentennial Commission and produced by Medallic Art Company is #3 of a reported mintage of 1,000 pieces, though it is unclear if the full mintage was produced.

A larger 58.5% gold 1976 American-Israeli Numismatic Association American Bicentennial Medal, also by the Medallic Art Company, was graded MS-63 by PCGS and sold for $2,400. It is apparently quite rare, with the AINA listing examples only in bronze and, like the American Revolution medal issue, most were likely melted.
