Two keys in the Duffy Family Collection in Heritage’s Sept. 12 Premier Session auction are one-year types of the gold $2.50 quarter eagle denomination. The 1796 Capped Bust, No Stars obverse type saw a mintage of only 963 and is the first-year of the denomination. Duffy’s example graded About Uncirculated 50 and sold for $152,400. Stars would be added that year, and the type would continue until 1807 with stars surrounding Liberty.

The Capped Draped Bust type emerged in 1808 only, with 2,710 pieces struck. The Duffy example graded PCGS AU-53 and brought $126,000, with the consignor advising bidders, “I hope the new owners will have as much joy in collecting coins as I have, and that the new owners will experience the pleasure of sharing them with the next generation, either by selling them or passing them down to a new generation of collectors.
