Market Analysis: Mr. Duffy’s gold type coins
- Published: Oct 6, 2024, 8 AM
A lead consignment at Heritage’s Sept. 12 Premier Session auction was the collection of Andrew Duffy, offered as the Duffy Family Collection. Duffy, alongside his brother and cousin, started collecting in the 1970s, eventually focusing on a complete U.S. type set graded by Professional Coin Grading Service.
Leading the consignment was a 1907 Indian Head, Rolled Rim gold $10 eagle. Graded About Uncirculated 55 by PCGS and carrying a green Certified Acceptance Corp. sticker, it brought $186,000. It is second only to the 1933 Indian Head eagle in rarity in the series, and the Rolled Edge feature was part of experimentation at the Philadelphia Mint to have well-struck examples of Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ design that also were stackable. Around 50 are thought to survive today, and this one features a bit of wear on the high points, and some softness of strike in the center, with orange-gold surfaces that have significant amounts of luster along with some light abrasions.
