Making its first auction appearance since 1978, a Noe 3-B, Salmon 3-C undated (1652) NE shilling graded About Uncirculated 58 by Numismatic Guaranty Co. sold for $192,000 at the November 18 session. It is among the finest of the approximately 70 known NE shillings made with simple device punches that were similar to a silversmith’s hallmark. An abbreviation for New England on one side and the denomination in Roman Numerals provided basic information for users who were confident that these were struck with high-quality silver.

There are six distinct varieties of the NE shillings and nearly a third are in institutional collections. The offered coin was previously certified AU-53 by PCGS and Stack’s Bowers adds, “The planchet is of unusually high quality for the type, essentially round with generally minor, natural scalloping at left and right.”
