Market Analysis: First year of Capped Bust half design

A lustrous O-114 1807 Capped Bust, Large Obverse Stars half dollar graded PCGS MS-65 with a green CAC sticker sold for $192,000, improving on the $152,750 it realized in 2013 at the second Eric P. Newman auction.

The Paul Gerrie Collection focuses on coins with solid eye appeal and high-surface quality. While he started collecting Draped Bust and Capped Bust half dollars in the About Uncirculated 55 to AU-58 range, he eventually moved towards high-end Mint State coins, including dozens of gems in MS-65 and MS-66.

Among the loveliest is the first year of the type after the half dollar transitioned from the Draped Bust design: an Overton 114 1807 Capped Bust, Large Obverse Stars half dollar graded MS-65 by PCGS with a green Certified Acceptance Corp. sticker recognizing quality within the grade that Heritage Auctions sold for $192,000 on Aug. 14.

It was formerly part of the Eric P. Newman collection, selling for $152,750 at Heritage’s November 2013 offering, where it was graded MS-65 by Numismatic Guaranty Co. It has the distinctive color seen on Newman’s half dollars, and Heritage shared, “This coin is a stunning Gem, with brilliant silver centers surrounded by vivid rings of golden-brown and lavender toning.”
