Errors are widely collected beyond U.S. coins, as seen by a double-struck Cuban 1949 20-centavo coin graded MS-64 by NGC that realized $7,800 at Heritage on Nov. 1. The second strike is dramatically off-center, resulting in two dates that visually sit atop one another. Bold luster is seen, with just a few stray contact marks that prevent a higher grade.

Heritage’s cataloger noted the broad collecting base for Cuban error coins, writing, “While we’ve handled off-center strikes within this series with great success, we’ve yet to encounter any specimen of this vintage and denomination to include a second strike, and with nearly none having been seen on the market in recent decades, can only imagine its popularity when crossing the auction block.”
