The Platt family decided to sell its coin collection in 2023, after several generations had added to the collection started by Thomas Collier Platt, who lived from 1833 to 1910.

A 1928 Hawaii Discovery Sesquicentennial commemorative half dollar is among the later purchases, featuring the distinctive olive toning seen on many half dollars of this issue. Graded Mint State 65+ by Professional Coin Grading Service, it sold for $3,600 in Stack’s Bowers Galleries’ mid-August auctions.

Another classic commemorative with the typical toning seen on the issue was a 1922 Grant Memorial, With Star half dollar graded MS-65 by PCGS that sold for $3,840.

The cataloger wrote, “A delicate overlay of pearlescent pewter gray patina blankets both sides of this lustrous and satiny Gem,” and like the Hawaii commemorative coin, it had the look of a coin that had been undisturbed for a century or so.
