The market for top-graded examples of otherwise common coins remains electric, as seen in the $57,600 that a 1946 Walking Liberty half dollar graded Mint State 68 by PCGS and given a green CAC sticker brought at the Nov. 19 Stack’s Bowers Rarities Night session. It combines near-flawless surface preservation with bold colors: vivid neon green, yellow, orange and pink.

The price bested the record of $50,400 that another example of the three similarly-graded PCGS examples realized this summer at Stack’s Bowers. With a mintage of 12,118,000, it is by no means rare in nearly all grades. The subject offering illustrates the issue on PCGS CoinFacts, and to give a sense of the price differences, PCGS has graded 47 examples at MS-67+, including one that realized $13,200 at a 2023 auction.
