Paul Gerrie’s Capped Bust half dollars were a significant component of Heritage’s Aug. 14 Platinum Night and other post-American Numismatic Association World’s Fair of Money sessions, with 248 half dollars offered.

A collector over nearly seven decades, Gerrie said, “I really like all these coins and it has been challenging and interesting and a pleasure to collect them. I feel very fortunate for the many friendships I have made in the coin community.”

Leading the offering was an 1817/4 Capped Bust half dollar of the Overton 102a variety graded Very Fine 20 by Professional Coin Grading Service, the fifth finest of 11 known. The overdate is clear although the subject coin is from a late die state, with a vertical curved crack in the center of the obverse. Heritage called it “one of the most pleasing survivors among those few pieces known.” It sold for $288,000.
