Whitman Publishing is the largest publisher of numismatic books and coin-collecting supplies. Its most famous publication is the annually issued Guide Book of United States Coins, popularly known as the “Red Book.” With more than 23 million copies in print since 1946, the Red Book is the hobby’s best-selling retail price guide, and one of the biggest nonfiction titles in U.S. publishing history. In 1964 the 18th edition was ranked fifth on the list of best-selling nonfiction—ahead of Dale Carnegie’s How to Win Friends and Influence People (at no. 6) and John F. Kennedy’s Profiles in Courage (no. 9).
The American Numismatic Association is an organization that was founded in 1891 to promote knowledge of numismatics (the study of money) along educational, historical, and scientific lines, as well as to encourage interest in the hobby of coin collecting. It was congressionally chartered in 1912. Today the ANA’s national headquarters (including the Dwight N. Manley Numismatic Library and the Edward C. Rochette Money Museum) are located in Colorado Springs, Colorado. The association’s Web site is at www.money.org.
The 2015 Whitman “Share Your Hobby” Photo Contest was open to all photographers 18 and older. Entries were judged by Whitman Publishing staff, Numismatic Director Q. David Bowers, and Red Book Senior Editor Kenneth Bressett.
