Striving for completeness
State quarters offer great opportunity to complete a collection even for beginners

By Michele Orzano
COIN WORLD Staff

Collectors strive for completeness.

Acquiring coins by year or type to complete a specific series can take as little as a few months to a number of years, depending on the series.

Therein lies the inherent beauty of the State quarter dollars program. These coins began a new phase of the Washington quarter dollar series in 1999 with the introduction of a 10-year program to honor each of the 50 states. The State quarters program will end in 2008 with the introduction of Hawaii's coin that fall.

Collectors can expect five new quarter dollar designs every year until the end of the program.

Though some collectors were concerned at first about the availability of earlier issues, Coin World staff routinely sees 1999, 2000 and 2001 issues still in circulation. So no matter when you got involved in the hobby you can still find coins to fill out your collection.

It also means you and any others you introduce to the hobby will have something new to study and admire for a long time to come.

What's not to like? Enjoy the holiday seasons upon us and introduce someone to the long-term fun of the hobby.
