The
Classic Head Cent
The Classic Head cent, introduced in
1808, was designed by John Reich, and is part of
the large
cent series. The composition of this
cent is 100 percent copper. All examples were
struck at the Philadelphia Mint and, therefore,
have no Mint marks.
Some collectors refer
to this coin as the "Turban Head" design because
the cap Liberty wears on the obverse
resembles a turban.
The 1809 cent is the
scarcest coin for the short series
with the second lowest mintage at 222,867. The
Classic Head cent series lasted until 1814. All
coins in this series have a plain edge.
