Gov. Zell Miller’s
selection features a state outline enclosing a
peach, with a banner of the state motto
"WISDOM, JUSTICE,
MODERATION" and a
border of live oak sprigs. Georgia is known as the
"Peach State."
Miller asked the
state's Council for the Arts to recommend designs.
Five designs were sent to Washington to be
reviewed by the Citizens Commemorative Coin
Advisory Committee, the Commission of Fine Arts
and Treasury offices in May 1998, and Miller
selected the winning design based on their
recommendations. It was one of several designs
with similar themes of the peach and state
outline.
