The head of the Smithsonian Institution has asked Secretary of the Treasury Paul O'Neill to order the U.S. Mint to strike an additional 500,000 American Buffalo commemorative silver dollars in 2001. The original authorized mintage of 500,000 coins sold out in pre-issue sales in mid-June.

Sen. Ben Nighthorse Campbell, R-Colo., has asked that Sec. O'Neill direct the U.S. Mint to strike an additional 250,000 American Buffalo silver dollar coins in 2001. However, he suggests that the coins carry a "small 2 or other appropriate distinctive mark to designate them as being the product of a second authorized striking."
