About U.S. Coins

Olympic Commemorative Coins

The 1992 XXV Olympiad half dollar, dollar and $5 half eagle comprise the second U.S. Olympic commemorative coin series honoring an event not taking place in the United States.

The Summer Olympics took place in Barcelona, Spain. The Winter Olympiad of the same year took place in Albertville and Savoie in France.

The coins were issued in part to raise funds to train U.S. athletes for the Games. The same reasoning was given for the 1988 Olympic coin program. The 1988 Games were held in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, and Seoul, South Korea.

A gymnast is shown on the copper-nickel clad 1992 half dollar, a baseball player on the silver dollar and a track runner on the gold half eagle.
