Liberty of the Confederacy

Portraits of Lucy Holcome Pickens appear on several denominations of Confederate States of America notes. But why her portrait?

Pickens, wife of F.W. Pickens, the governor of South Carolina from 1860 to 1862, was widely known throughout the South. But apparently not widely enough known because her portrait on the $100 note was often thought to be that of Varina Davis, wife of Jefferson Davis, president of the Confederacy.

Pickens' portrait on the $100 note probably represented all women of the South just as the group of soldiers represented the Civil War battlefields. A different portrait of her was used on the $1 note.
