About U.S. Coins

Continental Currency of the American Revolution

The Continental Congress authorized the issuance of Continental Currency during the American Revolution. The designs were often highly imaginative, and many used symbolism related to the American Colonies.

Continental Currency, while ultimately rejected by the citizenry, often carried mottoes to encourage recipients in the struggle for liberty.

A $20 Continental Currency note features a "portrait" of the wind blowing on the waves with the motto "driven by force." A $60 note features the motto "God reigns, let the earth rejoice" from Psalm 97.

An $8 note features a harp with 13 strings, representing the Colonies, and the motto "the large Colonies and the small Colonies are in harmony."
