About U.S. Coins

U.S. 2-cent motto varieties

The 2-cent coin, designed by James B. Longacre, made its debut in 1864, amidst the Civil War.

The motto IN GOD WE TRUST also made its debut on the 2-cent coin.

The bronze coins lasted for only nine years - from 1864 to 1872. In 1873, the last year of the series, only two Proof versions were struck.

Two varieties are known for the 1864 2-cent coin. The Small Motto variety, which is scarcer of the two, has a wider D in GOD than on the Large Motto variety. The stem which is under the WE is distinct and visible on the Small Motto coin.
